Change in Excise Law
It was announced today that there would be a change in the Excise Law that may well have a significant impact on the businesses of some of our most notable liquor entrepreneurs. It seems that without further ado the restrictions on production are to be lifted and the excessive taxes to be lowered.
The Excise Act of 1823 authorised production of malt whisky against the payment of a licence of 10 pounds, and a tax by gallon of pure spirit. This law is due to the Duke of Gordon, and is the end of illegal distillation. It will be good for excellent revenues for the government as well as for the distillers.
These developments mean that Hankey Bannister & Co. can expand its production and trade with Scotland’s distilleries.
